Totland Retreat #5

Yesterday was the last day of the Wight Craft Circles fifth retreat held at Totland Bay Youth Hostel. We are lucky enough to be able to rent out the whole hostel using the rooms as we please. We always have a lovely select group of ladies join us from the Island and mainland UK. The atmosphere is always lighthearted and fun, with plenty of creative juices flowing everyone mucks in to make these weekends so good!

Crafting into the night is something we all enjoy doing. The PJ's go on straight after dinner, we all get comfy and the hours slip away while we (as our blokes say) "cut and stick.

Saturday after lunch, we wandered off out into the wilds of the West Wight.

Our word of the day was "CAR!!"

Sunday afternoon we dragged everyone outside into the grounds of the YH for a silly photo shoot.

Then on Sunday evening we celebrated Anna's birthday, with presents, cake and a little fruit punch.

What a wonderful weekend we had! I am so looking forward to the next one!

Retreats booked for 2012 and 2013

We are just back from our 5th very successful retreat at Totland Bay.

I have the dates for the next two retreats are booked and I'm taking £15 deposits for the remaining seats now, If you would like to come along please contact Paige by email (listed in the side bar) for more details.

September 2012; 21st-23rd.
March 2013; 15th-17th.

Ticket prices are £45 (non-refundable £15 desposit required)
The plan is pretty much the same as the last five retreats.

Meet and greet once everyone has arrived (around 8pm),
Craft to your hearts content all weekend,
a walk to the beach or up on the downs on Saturday afternoon for a few photos

Week 52's Scrap with Us Challenge

So here we are at the 52nd challenge. It the last week of our year of challenges and it's a biggy! Personally I think it's the hardest yet. So to go out with a BANG!!! We are asking you this week to:

"Scrap Outside the Box"

I am really into baking at the moment and I thought that a recipe box would be the perfect addition to my kitchen.
I used a box that had bath gels, body creams and a pretty soap in (a xmas gift) for the main box, covered with October Afternoon papers. each recipe card (index cards from staples) is covered both sides with OA papers and then has the recipe printed on the front and I space on the back for a photo of the baked item. I plan to laminate each card once I have added the photos. hopefully this way they will have a longer life in my kitchen.

Back from the Bay

Another weekend of wind and rain greeted us at Totland for the fourth WCC Retreat.
But did we care? No!!! not a jot! We had a another wonderfully creative few days.

However my plan to use the camera more was a big FAIL!!!! I was so engrossed in crafting I totally forget to get some photos and am hoping that Diane and Nicole did a better job than me?

I did however manage to get this cracker of Anna and Zoe. This year the WCC was joined by some new friends, Alison (in the bear hat is one of my oldest chums) she bought along three of the nicest ladies you could ever want to meet. They had us in hoots when they came downstairs after dinner in matching Pj's.

Chantels butt was just the best!!!

We have booked our next retreat for this coming September but there are only a few places left. If you would like to join us drop either Sami or myself an email and we will give you more details.

Back from a very wet and windy Totland

Well all returned and unpacked from Totalnd, I have had chance to download the photos I took over the weekend. I wasn't surprised to see that unlike me I had used the camera very little over the three days. Possibly due to the poor weather (it rained almost all weekend) we had or just me need to create as many LO's as possible? However I did get some nice photos of us all busy working away to create our masterpieces.

On Saturday Julia celebrated a birthday so we had Balloons, pressies and of course

CAKE!!!

Nicole and Diane, along with their mum Anna they have attended all three of our retreat now. We love it when they come along and bring all their yummy new stash to show us.

Despite the wind and rain it seemed to be a productive weekend for everyone! I'm over the moon with all the LO's I produced and I know that Sam was very happy as well with all of hers

We would both like to say a huge THANK YOU!! to all the lovely ladies who attended and helped make our third retreat the best yet! may we have may more :) also a big thank you to Trav who helped transport all mine, Sarah's and Sam's crafting equipment to and from Totland over the weekend.

So here we are at week 29. Sam and I are wondering if the challenge should continue on line? Or become something just the two of us do as a scrap challenge between ourselves, which was the original idea. When we explained the "New Challenge each Week" idea to the WCC at the start of 2010, everyone wanted to join in and we decided to post the challenges on the blog each week so you could all join in. Sadly it seems now we rarely have anyone joining us :( or letting us know they have played along :( So I'm going to go for one last week and then possibly I'll draw a line under the challenge blogging, lets see how things go.

October Retreat

Hi Guys. As we creep closer to the beginning of October we can all start to get excited about the second retreat of the year. Can I ask that those of you who haven't popped a cheque in the post (or paid at the crop) please make sure you have do so by the 11th Sept. Thanks to all you early payers. Sam and I plan to be over Totland for about 2pm on the Friday so feel free to start arriving anytime from 2.30pm. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again and I understand we have another birthday to celebrate while we are away! So look forward to some Yummy Cakes :)

My favourite colour has always been red, so I used some Bassill dotted swiss as a base, some October Afternoon papers, Adornit alphas, Sam's Stampin' Up tab punch and American Crafts stamps.

Paiges Birthday surprise

At yesterdays monthly WCC crop, we decided to surprise Paige with a few birthday treats! It's her birthday today (Sunday) and although most of us are meeting up with her today at her Cockers on the beach walk, we thought there would be too much sand in the cake if we surprised her at the beach!

Retreat dates confirmed

Dates for the next two retreats have just been confirmed with the Youth Hostel at Totland Bay.

1st-3rd October 2010
&

18th - 20th February 2011

The plan for both these weekends will be pretty much the same as our past retreats.

Arrival and Check in from 3pm on the Friday,
Meet and great once everyone has arrived (around 7pm),
Unstructured crafting to your hearts content all weekend,

a walk to the beach or up on the downs on Saturday afternoon for a few photos,
check out Sunday at 2pm.

once again it's a self catering weekend and we ask that you tidy your bedroom on departure.

All for just £45

With places limited it's important to contact us quickly, if you fancy joining us,
all we ask is a £10 deposit (non-refundable) to hold your place.

Weekly Scrap Challenge #1

Sam and I both took part last year in Shimelle's Scrap like you mean it!

We thoroughly enjoyed having a challenge to complete each week, some times we were dragging behind a few weeks but we both completed the full 52 LO's in Sam's case and 51 LO's in mine (there was one challenge I didn't want to scrap)
Although we are both taking part in this years Document 2010. We miss having a weekly push to complete that layout. We made the decision over the weekend at the retreat, that we would make up our own list of 52 challenges and each week on Monday one of us will pull a challenge from a box at random and post that challenge here. We are calling it Scrap with Us

Back from Totland bay again.

This weekend just gone the Wight Craft Circle hosted their second retreat at Totland Bay. We There were 11 of us at the retreat so a nice small group enjoying the peace and quiet of the Bay crafting to our hearts content we all had a fantastic time.

October Retreat - booking now

It's just day's now until our February retreat and already I'm thinking about our next one. We are planning to book the dates this weekend while at the Hostel and we are expecting to take a weekend in the middle of October. I know we will have a few spare places, if you are nice ;) and would like to join us on the island for a weekend of unstructured scrapping/cardmaking/altering please email me and I'll fill you in on the details.

January Crop Cancelled

Due to the white-out on the island we have had to cancel this months crop. It's almost impossible to get cars out of drive ways and off estates, and even if we did manage somehow to get up to the hall dragging our craft totes behind us it would be so cold in the hall I think we might freeze while trying to be creative.

Totland YH booked for next retreat

Just a quickie for all you lovely ladies who have already shown an interest in attending our next retreat weekend at Totland Bay.

Return from Totland

We returned Sunday afternoon from our first retreat, Sam and I worked hard to plan and make this retreat enjoyable for all 17 Crafters who attended.
However as my old Nan used to say
"you can't please everyone"
Most of the ladies who attended had a wonderful time and have all booked places for the next retreat being held in Feb 2010.

We were all very productive and our mojo's seemed to be in full force.

I hope everyone likes cakes? I spent most of wednesday evening baking these mutlicoloured CupCakes to take along to the retreat today. It's also the first time I have tried making Red Velvet CupCakes so I rreally hope they taste good!

Some disapointing news about the retreat

sorry to be the bearer of bad news so close to the retreat but for personal reasons CTM are not able to attend the retreat this weekend, so there will be nowhere to buy any stash over the weekend. I'm really sorry to be telling you this as I was really looking forward myself to being able to splash out a bit on some nice new goodies. Vikki at CTM has however offered a 10% discount for anyone who is attending the crop on an on-line order

August Crop

August crop was a small one but perfect for my first class.

To start take a piece of 12x12 cardstock (CS) I tend to use a plain colour and also CS with a smooth finish as textured CS will often split on the score lines when folded.

Score the CS at 3", 6" & 9" on both sides. Making sure your measurements are perfect! This should give you the grid effect shown below.

then take your scissors and make three cuts. careful!!!
This is where it often all goes wrong! follow the miniguide for cutting!after cutting you can fold your CS, each square should fold onto the next. when you reach a corner, fold into the corner and then just carry on folding. once all the CS is folded you will have this. This is the spine of the book.

All the edges are folds (this is the only side of the book that will look like this).
holding the book by the spine, you will have the opening sides. these are a mix of folds and openings. I normally tape all these shut but you can make pockets for tags and other photos to go in. place tape so the CS opens like a book
(I use DST as it's stronger than a glue/tape runner and you need this to hold firm).Once all taped up you will have the middle of your book.
(if you find your edges aren't really straight just take a blade and trim them up slightly)
Put this to one side.You will now need some heavy CS. 2 pieces cut 8x8 cm
and 2 pieces of PP cut 10x10cm
Take a 1/2 mtr length of ribbon and tape down across the middle of your book covers. You will need to space the covers 1cm apart.You are now ready to attach your covers to the book. Make sure you butt the spine of the book right up to the edge of the cover (if you place the book in the centre of the cover it will not open fully). Again using plenty of DST stick down both covers. You should have a bubble of ribbon if done correctly. This extra ribbon is needed and will tighten as you fill your book. _______________________________
You will now need to cut 16 pieces of CS. I use scraps and off cuts for this part, each piece should measure 2 7/8x 2 7/8in". I like to round the corners and ink all the edges to give a nice finish.

Stick these in your book on every pageThen take your PP and cut 8 pieces that measure 6x6cm,
again I corner round and ink all the edges. I print my photos at home for these books, using wallet sized photos you get 9 prints.
(you only need 8 but 9 works as well) photos are trimmed to 6x6cm. corners rounded and inked again. using up those scrapsYou guessed it! all shapes are inked. I normally raise a few shapes, careful not to raise them all as your book won't shut. stick down your Photos and PP, place your punched shapes and some journaling These minibooks are my version of one I saw made with a sheet of double sided Patterned CS a few years back. By adding a couple of layers to each page it gives the minibook a really chunky feel, almost like one of those early readers books. Sorry if you already knew how to make these, If you didn't give it a go! they are really quick and easy and make lovely little gifts.

For the first month in ages we all managed to gather together and spend the day scrapping. what with work and other commitments we haven't been able to be six since at least December. It was good to see everyone this month and I'm all ready looking forward to our next crop in July.

Cropping the day away

We held our April crop today one week early, due to the fact that Cockers on the Beach is being held next Saturday which Sam, Myself, Zoe, Shelby and possibly Teresa (so that five the the six of us) are attending.

Teresa spent a painstaking few hours (well it seemed like that long) poking holes in black sticky lacing.

Mandy got stuck into making a huge!!!! pile of wedding invites and using her trusty WoodWare trimmer and heart shaped punch.

Zoe not wanting her photo taken hid behind her Woodware.

and then scared the hell out of me with this glare ;)

good job I know she was only joking with me ;)

I'm not really sure I managed to made anything productive apart from a great big mess across my workspace ;)
Oh OK i did get two LO's done ;)

We were also joined today be two of our younger WCC members Sophie and Shelby, who worked on some cards, LO's and an Exploding box.

Capture the Magic

Vikki and Alison from CTM are joining us at our retreat in October.

They will be bringing a van full of stash, and running a mini shop for the weekend. With Island craft shop being so limited on scrapbooking stash I think this is a real treat :)

Hopefully they will also get the chance to do some scrapping :) something I know Vikki doesn't do much of anymore since she opened CTM in Soham.

Vikki is also happy to bring any web made orders with her, so if you fancy something specific make and order and leave a note about attending the Retreat your stash will be waiting for you when you arrive at Totland Bay!

how quickly did that happen we only mentioned it on UKS on Tuesday, visited the retreat on Thursday and we are all sold out on Friday! that must be a record surely?????

Wight Craft Circle Retreat

This evening after work Sam and I took a drive out to Totland Bay to see our first choice of Retreat locations. Thankfully we found that it ticked every box on our long list of requirements and we are very happy to announce that the first Wight Craft Circle retreat will be held here on

16th-18th October 2009. The bedrooms were all lovely, clean and fresh smelling, there are ten rooms with plenty of beds for loads of happy scrappers.

The dining room holds enough tables for 16 scrappers and we have asked about more tables for equipment and this will not be a problem.

The Quiet lounge upstairs is very peaceful and looks like somewhere to relax while refreshing the mojo with Cake and Coffee.

On the drive home we just had to pull over and take a photo of the sun settling into the sea.

Sam and I are very excited about this retreat it will be the first that either of us has been to let alone organized.

We do have some spaces available for this retreat if you are interested in joining us on the beautiful Isle of Wight for a weekend of scraping fun please contact Paige at WCC@cockers.biz

We have decided that there will be no classes at this crop and we ask that attendees bring their own food (the kitchens are great and there is plenty of room for more than a few cooks at the same time) and stash.

Planning our First Retreat

We have talked and talked about a retreat now for a few months and yesterday I put our talks into action!!!! We (Sami, Zoe and Myself) are driving out on Thursday to have a good look about, but we think Totland Bay Youth Hostel will be the place for us. we are plan to book a weekend in either October or November, and spend the whole weekend just scrapping....... with maybe a little cake eating and chatting in there somewhere as well :)
